Desert Villa, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
This is a dream home that we developed for our client from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The entire design revolves around functionality and incorporates a harmonious interplay between the main zones and the sun's position. One of the fundamental approaches we implemented in the design is the open-plan layout. This layout encourages fluid and continuous movement throughout the living spaces. The house comprises five main blocks: the main living area, service block area, master bedroom zone, two bedrooms area, garage, and outdoor pool. The alignment of these five blocks with the sun's trajectory forms the cornerstone of our design approach.
- The main living area is situated on the northwest side, strategically positioned to minimize direct sunlight exposure. By recessing the living area from the garage, the latter acts as a natural barrier against the westward sun in the afternoon. Integral to the design are overhangs and vertical battens, serving as key shading elements. These elements, combined with the garage, enable the incorporation of expansive glass openings while safeguarding against excessive heat gain throughout the year, particularly during the summer. To ensure optimal spatial dynamics, we conducted a comprehensive shadow study, providing insights into varying shadow patterns throughout different seasons. A pivotal feature of the living area is its seamless connection to the pool area. This connection is facilitated by the ability to fully open the living area through large sliding glass doors at both the entrance and the poolside. This design affords the luxury of merging indoor and outdoor spaces, a characteristic that imbues the living area with openness, luminosity, and ventilation. The layout encompasses a generously proportioned dining island adjoining the kitchenette, complemented by a dedicated room for a dining table. Access to the living area is provided through a lateral entrance that leads into a reception space.
- The service block area is strategically positioned on the western side, which experiences the most intense sunlight. This location lends itself naturally to housing the service facilities, effectively acting as a heat buffer for the main living area. A thoughtful connection is established between the garage and the service block to enhance functional coherence.
- The master bedroom zone occupies the northeastern corner, benefiting from minimal sun exposure. This placement affords the master bedroom a private terrace (garden) that complements its exclusive nature.
- The two-bedroom area is situated on the southwest corner, seamlessly connected to the living room.
- The garage, prominently positioned at the front and closer to the street, serves as a sunshield for the main living area.
- The pool occupies a central position among the blocks and seamlessly integrates with the living area when the sliding doors are open. Furthermore, the pool assumes an interior element role, aesthetically enhancing the view along the bedroom corridors. Adjacent to the pool, we have designated a BBQ area and a sitting area for added functional appeal.
- The fountain emerges as a pivotal design element, symbolizing life and presence. Placed at the far end of the property, the fountain's strategic location ensures its pervasive influence on the entirety of the house. Positioned along the northwest-southeast axis, the sound and sight of flowing water become an integral sensory experience when the house is open. Additionally, the creative utilization of an existing prominent wall further accentuates the fountain's presence.
We developed concept design, 3D visualization, construction drawings, structural design, HVAC, and Bill of Quantities (BoQ).
